Clash of the window furnishings

Bold wallpaper with bold curtains

Choosing a wallpaper to complement your window furnishings, especially when you have patterned curtains or blinds can be a tricky business. But it can be done as the image above demonstrates.

If your patterned window furnishings are out-of-date and a bit shabby, this is a great excuse to update them to something more subtle that will complement your choice of wallpaper.

If you’ve only recently purchased your drapes/curtains/blinds, of course you’ll want to keep them. If your heart is set on wallpaper, my advice is to choose a neutral, textured wallpaper design with minimal pattern if you already have patterned window furnishings, like the wallpaper shown in the image.

If your heart is set on choosing a bold, patterned wallpaper design but you don’t think it will work well with your window furnishings, don’t wallpaper directly around your window furnishings and avoid wallpapering on the adjacent wall. Instead, wallpaper the opposite wall.

Clashes of colour and style can work. It all comes down to personal taste.

Do you have any examples of bold window furnishings and wallpaper that look good?

Another one of those chicken vs egg decorating questions…

When it comes to decorating your home or business and choosing a colour scheme, what did you consider first?

This is one of those chicken and egg type of questions but one I’m frequently asked by people who are decorating their home or business. So, what do you think should come first? Did you choose your paint colour scheme, then curtains, then wallpaper? Or did you start with your feature wall and work back from there?

And what about flooring? When do you make that decision? Have you ever decorated a room around your favourite couch or dining table?

Of course I’d love for everyone to choose their wallpaper design for their feature wall first and then let everything flow from there. But in reality, the paint is already on the wall and the carpet laid and tiles are down before I get there. And that’s not a bad thing. It’s good to be creative within boundaries.

So tell me, how and when did you choose your colour scheme?

Why autumnal colours are good all year round

We received a new wallpaper sample book this week which has more than 100 fresh new designs. It features a lot of rustic, earthy, autumnal colours and some very stylish designs. *Swoon*

Autumn is my favourite season; those foggy, crispy mornings that break into big blue sky days with warm afternoons and trees exploding in colours all around.

Here is a design collection heavy in autumnal colours and I’m just loving it.

A favourite design of mine from this new book is ‘Caruso’. The background for this wallpaper is a lightly textured brown colour that changes in its richness depending on the light. It’s dark brown in softer, yellow light, but a light cocoa in broad daylight. The design itself is smooth gold with a metallic finish. It’s also available in white and silver.

In keeping with the rustic, autumnal feel, what do you think of this design? Do you think it will work well as a full feature wall or should it be a single panel feature as it is in the image below?

This next wallpaper design has a vaguely 1980s abstract art feel to it. The colours are so rich and there’s a small hint of sparkle in those broad brush strokes.

And finally, here’s another favourite from this new collection, Noble Baroque. It’s a blend of yellows and golds with the bold dark print again with just a hint of sparkle.  I feel quite regal just looking at it.

But I’m not sure about that bricked fireplace though!

I think autumnal colours are great all year round because their earthy tones are easy to match with timber, stone and other natural products. They also create a feeling of warmth and cosiness.
